The message to the church at Smyrna indicate they were poor yet Jesus says they were rich. Poverty means having nothing at all. These Christians were economically destitute although they were rich. Basically they saw themselves as poor and unable to thrive possibly without knowing their capacities and capabilities and opportunities available to them. Many people today are languishing in abject poverty though having all it takes to be rich. Any wonder slaves are riding on horses and princes are walking on foot (Eccl. 10:7) It pays to discover the opportunities around you and what you can do given your training and skill. Treasures usually are hidden and needs to be discovered. That you can’t see them does not mean they are not there. You need your spiritual eyes to be opened and your skills to be honed and sharpened.
